On Thursday December 16, 2010, the City of Ottawa’s contractor for the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge poured approximately 1400 cubic metres of concrete to form the eastern footing of the $48 million city bridge spanning the Rideau River. Three concrete production plants supplied approximately 150 truckloads of concrete beginning at 4:00 am with deliveries to the bridge site lasting all day and into the evening. The cummulative load will weigh approximately 3000 tonnes.
"This bridge is a significant engineering undertaking and I am pleased to see progress being made on this important project for South Ottawa," said Gloucester-South Nepean Councillor Steve Desroches.
With a main span of 125 metres, the bridge will be the longest arch span in Ottawa. The length of the bridge is longer than a Canadian Football League field. The top of the main arch is 31 metres above the water of the Rideau River and the main superstructure will weigh approximately 6600 tonnes.
Ottawa Police were on hand on Thursday at River Road and Earl Armstrong Road to help coordinate traffic during the concrete delivery stage. It is anticipated that the bridge’s western footing will be poured in March of 2011.
The bridge is being funded with the assistance of the federal and provincial governments.
